MagnaMedics to next phase at Chemelot

MagnaMedics Diagnostics BV will be moving on December 1st 2008 from Maastricht Biopartner Centre to the new Chemelot Research & Business Campus in Geleen. “We have passed our start-up phase,” says MagnaMedics’ CSO-CEO Paul Borm. “At Chemelot we can use the available know-how and facilities on new materials, to further extend our production and markets.

MagnaMedics Diagnostics BV is part of a German Holding (MagnaMedics GmbH) and has been active since 2004 in the Biopartner Centre in Maastricht. MagnaMedics engineers and produces magnetic nano- and microparticles that are used in diagnostic kits for determination of biomarkers in body fluids. We have a flexible production which allows us to tailor-made or customize our standard products to the demand of the users. We are focusing more and more on Proteomics, and more specifically on the high-quantity (mg) isolation of proteins as well as on research customers active in high-throughput screening of biomarkers.

Personalized medicine

MagnaMedics also develops drug delivery tools and enables medical devices for imaging in MRI suing its MagnaFy technology. “Diagnostics, imaging en therapy are the key-words for personalized medicine ” according to Paul Borm . “In addition the convergence between life sciences and nanotechnology is a driver for many new developments and we are in the middle of this”. Our goal for the next three years is to further extend our development and production. We expect better conditions for this at the ChemMaterials Research & Business campus, which intends to be a campus for open innovation.”

Across borders

Upon its start in Maastricht, MagnaMedics obtained start capital from regional investors in the South of the Netherlands, including LIOF en het Technostartersfonds Zuidoost Nederland B.V. (50% NV Brabantse Ontwikkelings Maatschappij en 50% NV Industriebank LIOF). For further growth, MagnaMedics has now obtained a significant sum by a consortium of two new German venture funds (S-UBG from Aachen and BSVG from Munich) and Limburg Ventures ( LIOF and DSM). “We have investors and shareholders across the Dutch-German borders, which underlines the international profile of our company and activities.” With this investment, Limburg Ventures increases its active participations to nine. The SUBG has more then 40 investments in promising SMEs, while BSVG extends its portfolio with companies active in early biotechnological developments. At the moment MagnaMedics has 8 employees but will grow to 10-15 people over the next year.
